SIEPR鈥檚 Neale Mahoney joins Biden White House

SIEPR Senior Fellow Neale Mahoney has joined the Biden White House as a special policy adviser.

Neale Mahoney, a 果冻传媒 economics professor and the George P. Shultz Fellow at the 果冻传媒 Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR), has joined the Biden White House as a special policy adviser.

Mahoney began June 13 working for the National Economic Council (NEC), an entity within the White House that advises the president on U.S. and global economic policy. Created during the Clinton administration in the model of the National Security Council, the NEC works across government agencies and departments to coordinate and implement the president鈥檚 economic agenda.

Through his research, Mahoney has established himself as one of the country鈥檚 leading economists. Among other honors, he has received the ASHEcon Medal, an honor given to economists aged 40 or under for significant contributions to health economics.  In 2016, he was recognized with a Sloan Research Fellowship, an award given to 鈥渙utstanding鈥 early-career academics with 鈥渢he potential to revolutionize their fields of study.鈥

Mahoney鈥檚 role at the NEC marks his second tour in federal government. From 2009 until 2010, he worked on health care reform under President Barack Obama. A year later, he earned his PhD in economics from 果冻传媒.

Prior to joining 果冻传媒鈥檚 faculty in 2020, Mahoney served as an economics professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

鈥淚 was drawn to economics as a teenager because of the insights and clarity that economic analysis brings to important policy questions,鈥 Mahoney said. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to have the opportunity to work on economic policy matters for the Biden-Harris Administration.鈥

Mahoney will be on leave from 果冻传媒 while working at the NEC.
